Greetings from Mumbai! – updated on Friday

Debbie, Bryony, Matthew and James are in Mumbai, India, to visit our partner school – Udayachal High School.  They arrived in India on Saturday 20th January and will be there until Saturday 27th January.

As and when we get news from them, we will post updates.

On Sunday, the group went sightseeing in Mumbai.  They went to see the Taj Hotel and the India Gate.  They also went to the house that Gandhi lived in for 17 years – it is now an amazing museum.

Today they have been given a fantastic welcome in school – truly ceremonial, with marching bands and beautiful traditional dancing.  James and Matthew have been grinding cumin seeds into powder and printing cloth for the enterprise department.  The cloth will be sold to raise money for the school in the slum that Udayachal supports. They also had a great time playing volleyball with some students.

Tuesday 23rd January – Update

The welcome at Udayachal remains amazing! All of the staff and students have been thoroughly prepared for their visit by Principal Rekha Pandy.

They are greeted with enthusiasm wherever we go and all their needs are met.

James and Matt are embracing every bit of the experience. Debbie and Bryony are learning all of the time.

Today they have joined lessons on Child Labour, the environment, PE, circle time and cookery.

Wednesday 24th January – Update

The principal of Udayachal High School, Rekha Pandy, took the group out for an amazing traditional India thali meal.  Rekha’s son also accompanied them.

This morning, Debbie, Bryony, James and Matt were in school and had an amazing cultural experience with the teachers and some students.  First the teachers blessed them in a puja ceremony, then some of students did mendhi patterns on their hands.  The music teachers then played some traditional music which everyone danced to – even Matt and James!!  The teachers had made some special home cooked food which they all enjoyed together.

This afternoon they have visited the Prince of Wales Museum in central Mumbai.  They took part in activities such as making coins and bookmarks and had a great time.
