As a school that values a pupil centered approach, our main purpose and drive for our English curriculum is to enable all students to progress from school with at least a functional level of reading and writing; in order to access the wider world safely and with fulfilment. We endeavour to promote high expectations and aspirations that challenge all learners to gain a deeper understanding of the English language, with the intention of supporting them in reaching their full potentials for their futures. Through a rich, purposeful curriculum, we aim to provide our students with the skills and attributes to take ownership of their learning journey as we provide a helping hand along the way. Including developing socially and emotionally in line with their own personal needs. Through a clear progression of pathways for reading and writing, we intend to nurture a love of creative thinking and inquisitiveness to explore through appropriate literature, in order for the students to develop a curiosity in real-life contexts.

At St Martins we believe that phonics and reading is the gateway to all opportunities.
“The ability to read is a fundamental life skill.” A. Spielman
